The Walrus travels to London & Winnipeg for public events

Having won more National Magazine Awards than any other publication since 2003, The Walrus knows a thing or two about successful audience engagement.

Next month the magazine is hosting two compelling events: “The Walrus Talks Creativity,” on Thursday March 12 at Western University in London, Ontario; and, perhaps dearer to its namesake’s ecosystem, “The Walrus Talks Arctic” at the Winnipeg Art Gallery on March 26.

The London event will feature poet Mustafa Ahmed, authors Emma Donoghue and Elaine Lui, actor Juggun Kazim, Blackberry’s lead designer Brian Paschke, the Toronto International Film Festival’s Cameron Bailey, musicians Saukrates and David Usher,  and Joel Faflak, director of the School for Advanced Studies in the Arts and Humanities, Western University.

Tickets to the event are $20 for general; $15 for students.

Two weeks later in Winnipeg, The Walrus will welcome Erin Freeland Ballantyne of Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning, artist and sculptor Ruben Komangapik, historian Whitney Lackenbauer, Michael Maltzan, architect of the WAG’s new Inuit Art Centre, explorer and author James RaffanLola Sheppard, Arctic Adaptations project lead, Tanya Tagaq, performer and Polaris Prize winner, and Sheila Watt-Cloutier, environmental and human rights advocate.

Tickets to the event are $20 for general; $15 for students.

NMAF partners with Indigo Books & Music Inc in Newsstand Promotion

The National Magazine Awards Foundation (NMAF) is pleased to announce the launch of a nationwide newsstand promotion designed to increase awareness about Canada’s top award-winning magazines. This strategic partnership with Indigo Books & Music, Inc, part of the NMAF’s mandate to promote award-winning magazines and content, will run from September 22 to October 18. During this period, this year’s eligible winning publications will be featured in a special NMA display in 91 Indigo and Chapters superstores across the country.

More specifically, the objective of this initiative is to significantly increase single-copy sales of award-winning magazines by providing publishers with the opportunity to leverage their prestigious, nationally recognized award through a group marketing effort to increase newsstand sales, magazine awareness, and future subscriptions in a cost-effective manner.

While print publications are rising to meet the challenges and opportunities of the digital era, the newsstand remains a significant place of reader engagement. With this promotion, the NMAF’s goal is to provide magazines with a unique opportunity to showcase their award-winning status and to maximize their impact on the newsstand.

Participating magazines include Magazine of the Year winner Cottage Life, as well as award winners Azure, Chatelaine, ELLE Canada, FASHION Magazine, fshnunlimited (f.u.), Little Brother, Maclean’s, Prefix Photo, Sharp, Sportsnet, The Walrus, This Magazine, Toronto Life, and the United Church Observer.

We’ll be featuring each of these participating magazines here on the Magazine Awards blog in the coming weeks. And be sure to visit your local Chapters Indigo to check out the special NMA display. Follow us on Twitter @MagAwards for more updates.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
For this promotional effort the NMAF acknowledges the financial support of the Ontario Media Development Corporation, and gratefully thanks Indigo Books & Music Inc. for their support of the NMA newsstand promotion. The NMAF would also like to thank CNW Group.

An agency of the Government of Ontario, Ontario Media Development Corporation supports the province’s creative economy by providing innovative programs, services and funding for the film and television; book and magazine publishing; interactive digital media and music industries. www.omdc.on.ca

Off the Page, with The Feathertale Review editor Brett Popplewell

Off the Page is an interview series that appears regularly on the Magazine Awards blog. Today we catch up with Brett Popplewell, editor of The Feathertale Review, winner of the 2012 National Magazine Award for Best Single Issue.

NMAF: The Feathertale Review has been dubbed the “illegitimate love child of Mad Magazine and The New Yorker.” We just saw your latest issue, no. 11, double in size to 128 pages. Is this a signal to readers that the child is growing up? And if so, where is it headed?

Brett Popplewell: It’s definitely a sign that the child is growing up. Where it’s heading, I have no idea.

Truth is our entire team has grown up since our launch in 2006. We were just kids back then who felt there was an absence of high- and low-brow humour magazines in the Canadian market and thought we could be the cork to plug that hole. Lee Wilson, Feathertale’s co-founder and art director, and I wanted to create something that would feel fresh and cutting edge but that would hark back to an age when magazines leaned entirely on illustration to bring their words to life. We’re the ones who started calling our creation the “illegitimate love child of Mad Magazine and The New Yorker” because it felt like the best way to describe it.  Continue reading

NMA winner Richard Wagamese wins First Nations book award

National Magazine Award-winning writer Richard Wagamese, a member of the Ojibway Wabasseemoong First Nation of northern Ontario and author of 13 books, has won the inaugural Burt Award for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Literature, presented by the non-profit CODE and the Canada Council for the Arts.

He won for his latest novel, Indian Horse (Douglas & McIntyre), a story about the journey Saul Indian Horse, a northern Ontario Ojibway man, takes back through his life, as he is dying. The runners up were novels by Tara Lee Morin and James Bartleman.

Richard Wagamese was a National Magazine Award winner in 2010 for his story “Walking by the Crooked Water,” part of an Editorial Package called “Border Lines” published by Canadian Geographic magazine.

The Burt Award’s book purchase and distribution program will ensure that a minimum of 2,500 copies of each of the three winning titles will be delivered to First Nations, Métis and Inuit youth across Canada through community libraries, schools, Friendship Centres and summer literacy camps.

The Burt Award for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Literature was established by CODE – a Canadian charitable organization that has been advancing literacy and learning in Canada and around the world for over 50 years – in collaboration with William (Bill) Burt and the Literary Prizes Foundation. The Award is the result of a close collaboration with the Assembly of First Nations, the Métis National Council, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the National Association of Friendship Centres, Frontier College, GoodMinds, the Association of Canadian Publishers and the Canada Council for the Arts. A Writer’s Guide to Canadian Literary Magazines & Journals

THIS POST WAS LAST UPDATED ON August 31, 2017

They publish much of Canada’s best poetry and prose. The writers whose creative work appears in their pages range from established icons of Canadian literary arts–such as Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood and Lynn Coady, to name just a few–to new writers published for the first time.

They are Canada’s literary magazines, and they are not only a source of reading pleasure, but also a critical part of our country’s culture and a forum for literary artists across the land.

The following list, an A-to-Z guide to Canadian literary periodicals and their submissions guidelines, compiled by the National Magazine Awards Foundation, focuses on those magazines that currently publish short fiction, poetry and/or creative (aka literary) non-fiction. Many also accept submissions for essays, literary criticism, reviews, interviews, graphic narratives and visual art. And many have won National Magazine Awards. If we missed any, tell us via Twitter @MagAwards or contact us by email.
