The Digital Publishing Awards are proud to announce the launch of the digitalpublishing.blog— a new leading reference for digital publishers and media professionals.

This new online resource aims to assist both established and emerging talents of Canada’s digital publishing landscape with relevant, timely, educative and compelling information about their industry. Promotion of award-winning digital content, design, creators and innovation will be posted regularly through a digest of relevant industry news, events and developments, as well as profiles that promote the creative work of Canadian digital publishers.

We’ll publish compelling interviews with industry professionals describing the distinct processes behind their award-winning work From conceptualization to execution, we’ll speak with a wide range of digital media experts.

First up, we’re delighted to share our conversation with Jude Isabella, editor in chief of Hakai Magazine. Jude was a key member of the team that launched Hakai back in 2015 and has since served as a contributing writer and editor in chief. Based in Victoria, B.C. Hakai is an online magazine that explores science, society, and the environment from a coastal perspective.JudeQuotenb

The Digital Publishing Awards (DPAs) were created in consultation with Canada’s leading producers and creators of digital publishing. The DPAs recognize and promote excellence by Canadian digital publishers and content creators through an annual program of awards and national publicity efforts.

Call for Entries: 2017 Digital Publishing Awards

The NMAF is excited to announce the Call for Entries for the 2017 Digital Publishing Awards, honouring excellence by Canada’s digital publishers and creators in 22 awards categories. Submissions are now being accepted at digitalpublishingawards.ca and the deadline is January 31.

“In our second year as Canada’s preeminent digital awards competition, the 2017 DPAs have expanded to reflect new trends and attitudes in digital publishing and content. Over the past year, Canadian publishers and creators have thrilled audiences with informative and innovative digital journalism and storytelling. We are looking forward to rewarding the very best of Canada’s digital creators.”

Submissions are open to Canadian digital publishers and content creators whose work appeared in them during 2016. Eligible publications—including those that support established brands in magazine, newspaper, broadcast, B2B and other journalism, as well as those that serve their audiences exclusively as digital brands—is one with a permanent editorial staff in Canada and published in either English or French or a combination of both.

Awards for individual creators include a cash prize of $500.

WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR
After a successful inaugural year in 2016, the Digital Publishing Awards has expanded its program under the guidance of our Advisory Committee, feedback from participants and judges, and the NMAF Board of Directors.

Nominees announced for the 2016 Digital Publishing Awards

Today the NMAF announced the nominees for the inaugural Digital Publishing Awardsrecognizing excellence in the content and creation of Canadian digital publishing.

This year, 63 Canadian digital publications participated in the Digital Publishing Awards, submitting the best of their digital content, design and innovation from the past year for consideration in 14 awards categories.

The judges have nominated 66 entries from 21 different digital publications for this year’s awards, including 5 finalists for the coveted award of Digital Publication of the Year.

2016 DIGITAL PUBLISHING AWARDS SOIREE
Join members of Canada’s digital publishing industry for the 2016 Digital Publishing Awards soirée on Thursday, June 9 in the newly redesigned Portland Room at the Spoke Club in Toronto’s King West district, hosted by Chris Frey. TICKETS

Chris Frey is a Toronto-based writer, editor, and radio producer. Currently the Toronto correspondent for Monocle, he’s a six-time National Magazine Award winner and has contributed to The Guardian, The Walrus, Globe and Mail, Icon, Maisonneuve, Azure, and CBC Radio. In a past life Chris was the founding editor of Hazlitt, the Toronto Standard and Outpost magazine. In a future life (and any day now) he will finally complete his book Broken Atlas, a collection of international reportage.

Tickets include one free drink and food provided by the Spoke Club’s classically trained chef Rob Klunder, who creates sophisticated dishes influenced by seasonal ingredients, prepared simply but with flair. Cash bar and celebration of Canadian digital media will continue throughout the evening.

Rebate for Small Publishers at Digital Publishing Awards

The new Digital Publishing Awards program is offering a free entry to small digital publishers whose budgets could use a break. Publishers with annual revenue under $50,000 are eligible to participate.

To apply for the Small Publishers Rebate, complete the online application form and submit by February 8 (also the DPA’s Early-Bird deadline for discounted entry fees).

The 2016 Digital Publishing Awards are open to Canadian digital publishers, designers, innovators and content creators. Awards will be presented in 14 categories:
