The NMAF is excited to announce the Call for Entries for the 2018 Digital Publishing Awards, honouring excellence by Canada’s digital publishers and creators in 24 awards categories. Submissions are now being accepted at digitalpublishingawards.ca and the deadline is February 2nd, 2018.

Submissions are open to Canadian digital publishers and content creators whose work appeared in them during 2017. Eligible publications—including those that support established brands in magazine, newspaper, broadcast, B2B and other journalism, as well as those that serve their audiences exclusively as digital brands—is one with a permanent editorial staff in Canada and published in either English or French or a combination of both.

Awards for individual creators include a cash prize of $500. The Digital Publishing Awards continues to offer a Small Publisher’s Rebate and the Freelancer Support Fund.

What’s New This Year

Following two successful award years, the Digital Publishing Awards continue to expand its program under the guidance of our Advisory Committee—including Jean-Philippe Cipriani, Jude Isabella, Matt Frehner, and Kenny Yum—feedback from participants and judges, and the NMAF Board of Directors. Changes include:

  • The top overall prize—General Excellence in Digital Publishing—will be presented in three divisions, for small, medium and large publications.
  • One of the Best News Coverage categories will be exclusively open to small publications.
  • The awards for Best Service Feature, rewarding excellence in service journalism, have been revised to include the following three categories:
    • Lifestyle;
    • Careers and Personal Finances; and
    • Family and Health.
  • The Best Podcast category has been expanded and renamed Best Podcast and Audio Storytelling to include audio stories.
  • Three new categories have been added to the program:
    • Fiction;
    • Best Science and Technology Story; and
    • Best Photo Storytelling.

The entry fee for most awards is $100 at the Early-Bird rate (by January 19).
The final deadline for all entries is February 2, 2018.
The deadline to nominate someone for the Emerging Excellence Award or the Digital Publishing Leadership Award is March 1, 2018.

The Digital Publishing Awards promote and reward the achievements of those who create digital publishing content in Canada—the writers and editors, designers and developers, video and podcast producers, photographers and illustrators, and many others. The DPA program recognizes, celebrates and promotes to a national audience the innovative publishing teams that produce digital content in Canadian media.

The DPAs are produced by the National Media Awards Foundation, a charitable foundation whose mandate is to recognize and promote excellence in content creation of Canadian print and digital publications through annual programs of awards and national publicity efforts. Call for Judges: 41st National Magazine Awards

The National Media Awards Foundation is getting ready to honour the best in Canadian magazine and digital journalism at the 2018 National Magazine Awards and Digital Publishing Awards. The NMAF is currently accepting nominations for individuals to serve on the juries for this year’s awards programs, and join the great tradition of recognizing achievement by the creators of Canadian magazines and digital publications.

One of the reasons I volunteer as a judge for the NMAs is that the process is very well organized, completely transparent and fair. I really enjoy the discussion with my fellow judges. It’s collegial, and I almost always learn something. And every year I discover a few outstanding new writers who have produced great work. That’s a gift.

Ideal candidates should fulfill one or more of the following criteria:

  • Internationally renowned journalist, editor, designer or other expert with an interest in supporting the NMAF fulfill its mission.
  • Editor, art director, publisher, web editor or other staff member (past or present) of a Canadian magazine, whether or not your publication participates in the National Magazine Awards or Digital Publishing Awards;
  • Freelance or staff writer, illustrator, photographer or digital creator, where a significant portion of your work is in Canadian publications (especially if you have been nominated for or won a National Magazine Award or Digital Publishing Award yourself);
  • Journalist (print, broadcast, digital) with expertise in a particular field represented by one or more NMA or DPA categories (such as photojournalism, service, arts & culture, fiction, poetry, etc);
  • Academic or industry leader with expertise in a particular field;
  • Professionals and leaders from related cultural sectors, including the visual arts (film and television), the literary arts (book writing & publishing) and the performing arts (theatre, music).
  • Bilingual: Not all of our judges need be bilingual, but all awards juries will have at least one bilingual member.

The NMAF welcomes applications from individuals who bring different industry perspectives – from recognized leaders to celebrated emerging talents. We also aim for the judging panels to reflect our country’s diverse Indigenous, cultural and regional communities.

Having been involved since the 1980s, as a board member, president (1991) a member of a special review committee (Strategic Speculation) and a frequent judge, I have a real investment in the event. Get to Know the Canadian Magazine Industry: Intern with the NMAF!

If you’ve ever wanted a behind the scenes look at the Canadian magazine and digital publishing industry, here’s your chance! The National Media Awards Foundation (NMAF) is looking for an intern in Toronto, beginning in October 2017 (and yes, the internship is paid!).

As the Administrative Assistant Intern, you’ll be an integral part of the team, participating in everything from proofreading press releases to assisting with the awards judging process. You’ll make connections within the industry, meeting and liaising with some of the best magazine writers, editors, and publishers in Canada.

The contract runs from October 1st, 2017—June 30, 2018, and you’ll be working 10-15 hrs/week on average. Note that the NMAF produces two distinct awards programs – the National Media Awards and the Digital Publishing Awards – and that this paid internship opportunity has been made possible in part by the Government of Canada.

Position: Administrative Assistant

Contract Duration: October 1st, 2017—June 30, 2018; 10-15 hrs/week on average.

Description: The successful candidate will be reporting to and working in consultation with the NMAF Communications Manager and Special Projects Manager and specifically will:

  • Assist with the day-to-day operations of the NMAF office, including support for the submissions process, judging process, and awards production;
  • Handle some of the office-related communications and outreach with the Canadian media industry in both English and French—including but not limited to initiating and responding to phone calls and general email;
  • Assist with the research and production of content for the NMAF blogs (magazine-awards.com / prixmagazine.com & digitalpublishing.blog) and other social media channels;
  • Proofread communications materials and publications, including newsletters, press releases, website copy, gala programs and related material;
  • Assist with ongoing projects to promote the NMAF and its various initiatives;
  • Attend staff, board and committee meetings.

Requirements:

  • Pursuing or recently completed a degree or diploma in the fields of communications, publishing, administration, public relations, journalism or similar;
  • Exceptional communication skills;
  • Solid writing and editing skills;
  • Ability to work independently and on deadline with goal-oriented projects;
  • Career aspirations in the media industry or similar;
  • Strong interest in fulfilling the mandate and vision of the National Media Awards Foundation;
  • Familiarity with the Canadian magazine and/or digital media industry an asset;
  • Bilingualism (French-English) a strong asset.

Terms and Remuneration: The length of the contract will be from October 1st, 2017 to June 30, 2018. The average weekly commitment may range from 10 hours per week (Oct-Dec; Feb-Mar; Jun) to 20 hours per week (Jan; Apr-May). Working hours are flexible except at specific times, and most work may be completed remotely.

This internship is paid minimum wage.

GENERAL EXCELLENCE IN DIGITIAL PUBLISHING

This year the award for General Excellence in Digital Publishing was presented in two divisions: small publications & large publications.

Canadian Art won the Gold Medal for General Excellence in Digital Publishing: Small Publications. Honourable Mention in General Excellence in Digital Publishing: Small Publications was awarded to Hakai Magazine, LiisBeth, National Observer, Toronto Life and YMC: Motherhood Unfiltered.

CBC News won the Gold Medal for General Excellence in Digital Publishing: Large Publications. The CBC News team won 3 other Gold Medals in Best News Coverage: Local & Provincial, Best Online Video: Short and Best Service Feature: Family, Health & Careers.

 

EMERGING EXCELLENCE AWARD

Naël Shiab of L’actualité was named this year’s recipient of the Emerging Excellence Award. The award honours an individual whose early work in Canadian digital publishing shows the highest degree of craft and promise.

According to the Emerging Excellence Award jury:

“Naël Shiab is a bright light shining across the world of journalism. He combines the inquisitiveness and skepticism of a journalist with the creativity and three-dimensional thinking of a coder to create astonishing data-led work that illuminates and educates and entertains. He is the future of journalism and the more Naël Shiabs at work, the better off we are as an informed citizenry.”

 

DIGITAL PUBLISHING LEADERSHIP AWARD

The Digital Publishing Leadership Award was presented to Kenny Yum, managing editor of HuffPost Canada. The award honours an individual whose career contributions to Canadian digital publishing deserve recognition and celebration.

“Kenny Yum is the kind of journalistic leader who represents everything that’s exciting and worthwhile in our industry. Long before digital media was a priority for most places, Kenny was already working on merging high-quality Canadian journalism with innovative formats to connect intimately with audiences. After roles at The Globe and Mail, National Post, Financial Post and CBC, Kenny helped launched HuffPost Canada six years ago. There, he’s built one of the country’s youngest, most culturally diverse newsrooms, where he challenges us to strive for excellence and innovation every day.”

WINNERS HIGHLIGHTS

16 different publications received Digital Publishing Awards this year, including 10 publications which received their first-ever award.

The leading publication in this year’s Digital Publishing Awards is The Globe and Mail, winning a total of 12 awards, including 8 Gold and 4 Silver. They also received Honourable Mention in General Excellence in Digital Publishing: Large Publications.

Canadian Art, Canadian Press, Discourse Media, Hazlitt, HuffPost Canada, L’actualité, Policy Options, Ryerson Review of Journalism, VICE and Wedding Bells all won their first Digital Publishing Award this year.

CBC News, BuzzFeed Canada, Hakai Magazine, Today’s Parent, The Globe and Mail and Toronto Life won Digital Publishing Awards for the second year.

Naël Shiab won the inaugural Emerging Excellence Award, as well as the Silver Medal in Best Digital Initiative for his L’actualité piece, “Allez-vous être remplacé par un robot? Demandez-le à… notre robot!”

The Globe and Mail’sCrichton Farm” story won Gold in two categories: Best Feature Article: Short and Best Social Storytelling.

Toronto Life won the Gold Medal in Best Digital Design for the second year in a row.

The DPA jury has selected the inaugural recipient of the Digital Publishing Leadership Award. This prestigious recognition will be presented to Kenny Yum, managing editor of The Huffington Post Canada and AOL Canada. As a celebrated and widely-recognized leader, innovator and mentor, the DPAs are honoured to recognize Kenny’s contributions to the Canadian digital publishing industry.

Emerging Excellence Award
The DPAs are proud to present for the first time the Emerging Excellence Award, honouring an individual whose early work in Canadian digital publishing shows the highest degree of craft and promise. This year’s jury has nominated three standout individuals, with the single winner being announced at the Digital Publishing Award Soirée on Thursday June 1.The three candidates for the Emerging Excellence Award are:

The host of the 2017 Digital Publishing Awards will be Evan Munday, author and illustrator of the series of novels for young adults The Dead Kid Detective Agency (ECW Press). The first two books in the series were both nominated for the Silver Birch Award. Evan currently works as community manager for Type Books, co-hosts an Archie Comics podcast, and draws a notable Canadian every day and posts the illustration on Twitter using the hashtag #365Canadians.

Kenny Yum to receive Digital Publishing Leadership Award

The NMAF is thrilled to announce that Kenny Yum of Huffington Post Canada will be the first-ever recipient of the Digital Publishing Leadership Award, an award honouring an individual whose career contributions to Canadian digital publishing deserve recognition and celebration.

This award is the top individual honour in the Digital Publishing Awards, and will be presented to Kenny at the DPA awards soirée on June 1, along with all the other winners of the 2017 Digital Publishing Awards.

Leadership in Canadian digital publishing is a complex algorithm. It’s a function of creativity, innovation, and perseverance. It combines a rigorous commitment to the core principles of journalism with the ability to anticipate and respond to rapidly changing technological and cultural environments. It minimizes fiscal constraints while maximizing audience engagement. And most of all, it creates a diverse and dynamic space to experiment, fail, adapt, persist, and succeed—and to inspire great achievement in others. Perhaps no individual embodies this powerful formula more than Kenny Yum, managing editor of AOL Canada and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post Canada. In 2017, the National Media Awards Foundation is honoured to present him with the inaugural Digital Publishing Leadership Award.

After graduating from Ryerson University, where he was editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, Kenny became an editor at the Toronto Star and later The Globe and Mail, where he helped launch theglobeandmail.com in 2000. In 2007 he joined the National Post as managing editor of digital news, continuing to inspire his colleagues to innovate and grasp the unfolding potential of digital journalism. “Kenny drove the digital agenda at national newspapers long before digital was accepted as a priority, let alone the very future of journalism,” says Brodie Fenlon, CBC’s senior director of digital news. “His influence on website design can still be seen today on a number of sites.”

In 2011, Kenny was hired to launch The Huffington Post Canada, the first international bureau of the digital news startup. “We knew that in order to succeed in Canada,” says Nicholas Sabloff, executive editor of international for The Huffington Post, “we needed an editor-in-chief who was not only an accomplished leader and serious journalist, but also someone who would keep the site at the forefront of digital innovation and instill a spirit of experimentation and creativity as part of his team’s DNA.” Kenny Yum, he adds, was top of the list.

Indeed, innovation and experimentation are hallmarks of HuffPost’s success. In Kenny’s newsroom, notes Andree Lau, managing editor of news at Huffington Post Canada, “journalists are encouraged to be overly ambitious, granted permission to fail, and praised with genuine admiration when they succeed.” And no matter the initial outcome, say his colleagues, Kenny is quick to remind everyone he works with that success is a product of bold creativity. “From day one,” says Rashida Jeeva, Huffington Post Canada’s general manager, “Kenny set the tone for professionalism and quality that continues to shine through.”

The results are as evident as they are remarkable. Huff Post Canada operates in French and English with more than 5 million unique visitors a month, and a total of 9 million monthly including their global properties. “These are challenging times for media organizations,” notes Huffington Post’s managing editor of video, Sasha Nagy. “And it is incumbent on all of us to innovate daily in order to connect with a changing readership. It takes editors who are one part web developer and one part wordsmith. This is Kenny Yum.”

Those who’ve worked with Kenny at HuffPost emphasize his commitment to forging a cohesive team that maximizes skills and connections. Mere days before the site’s launch, in May 2011, Kenny literally tore down the walls in the HuffPost newsroom.

“He took one look at the grey cubicle walls and started dismantling them,” says Lisa Yeung, managing editor of lifestyle, thus “breaking down the barriers between editors so they could see and talk to each other more easily.”

That simple act helped set the tone for a workplace that is known to be a paragon of inclusiveness.

Diversity is another key strength of the digital teams that Kenny has helped build and lead. “At HuffPo Kenny has built one of the country’s youngest, most culturally diverse, and energetic newsrooms,” says Andree Lau. The result, adds Brodie Fenlon, “has been rich, unique editorial content that reflects the modern cultural mosaic of Canada in a way that few newsrooms can match.”

Leveraging that diversity and teamwork, say those who’ve worked with Kenny, would not be possible without his commitment to professionalism. “Our editors are diverse in their cultural and geographic backgrounds,” says Lisa Yeung, “but the enduring qualities that bind us together are rooted in Kenny’s ethos—respect, kindness, integrity, curiosity, and innovation.”

With Kenny Yum as leader, innovation never sleeps. In the past year, with the advent of distributed publishing, Kenny has aligned the HuffPost newsroom around the need to flourish under this new model. The results have been staggering, notes Sasha Nagy. “In a year, our Facebook pages spiked from half a million to 1.2 million followers. Video views have grown from 15 million per month to over 60 million.”

“One of Kenny’s great traits,” says Rashida Jeeva, “is his willingness to share his knowledge—much of it self-taught—with others. It’s not uncommon to find him leading training sessions with teams within, and outside of, Canada.”

In addition to fostering professional development at AOL Canada, Kenny has taught online journalism at Ryerson University and serves on the school’s advisory board. And he often volunteers his time to advise colleagues and industry associations on the possibilities of digital publishing in the future.

Through all of these achievements and accolades, Kenny’s personality is what strikes his colleagues as most deserving of recognition. “He is a quiet, confident leader,” says Brodie Fenlon, “who makes things happen behind the scenes, drives his teams to excellence, and never seeks public acknowledgement or recognition.” His list of accomplishments, adds Andree Lau, “does not fully convey the kind of integrity, excellence, and loyalty that he both exudes and inspires.” Perhaps, then, true leadership in digital publishing is more than just an algorithm of inputs. It’s also a function of character. And for that, the NMAF is proud to award the 2017 Digital Publishing Leadership Award to Kenny Yum.

We asked Huffington Post Canada’s team to name the particularly remarkable achievements during Kenny’s tenure. Here are just a few:

“In the fraught month we had to put it together. Kenny challenged us editorially, technically, and creatively,” says Andree Lau, HuffPost’s managing editor of news. “He pushed us to ask deeper questions, pushed for the Town Hall to be live-streamed on both HuffPost’s pages and Facebook Live, and assigned video clips to be distributed around the world. He rolled up his sleeves where necessary, and stepped back when he knew the team could figure it out themselves. The result was a polish, thought-provoking, and highly produced event.”

In this ongoing series exploring the experiences of children of immigrants through personal essays, features and video, notes Andree Lau, Kenny has shown that he is a “champion of diversity and visibility in Canada, and an enthusiastic supporter of developing the next generation of leaders in digital journalism.”

HuffPost spearheaded a week of special coverage on sexual assault in November 2014 in the immediate wake of the Jian Ghomeshi allegations. Further, under Kenny’s leadership HuffPost devoted ongoing coverage of violence against women, including extensive coverage of the Rehtaeh Parsons and Amanda Todd cases.

This video documentary series followed four Canadian soldiers and the complex changes they face after serving their country, and was nominated for a 2016 Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) Award

This investigation into Canada’s growing income divide, shepherded under Kenny’s leadership, won a Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) Award in 2011.

A 2012 news series that offered a glimpse into the lives of Millennials and the issues they face as a generation.

A video series highlighting the careers of notable Canadian women.

The NMAF is very pleased to share that the Freelancer Support Fund is also available for the Digital Publishing Awards, whose deadline to enter is Tuesday January 31.

The discounted entry fees allow freelance creators to submit their first two (2) entries at the discounted rate of $50 per submission.

With the 2nd Annual DPAs officially underway, we are very happy to offer this special discount to the freelance creators – the writers, videographers, editors, designers, developers, video and podcast producers, photographers and illustrators, and others – who are establishing excellence in Canadian digital publishing. There is a $500 cash prize for individual winners.

An eligible “freelancer” is someone:

  • who is not a staff member of a publication whose work they are submitting, and
  • whose byline appears on the work they are submitting.

If your magazine work also appeared in an online platform, it may be eligible to enter. Check out the full list of Rules & Eligibility.

The Freelancer Support Fund applies to your first two (2) entries only. The regular rate of $110 will apply to any submission entered in addition to the first two. Fees paid for submissions to the Digital Publishing Awards may be tax-deductible for freelancers. The DPAs are operated by the non-profit registered charity NMAF.

Awards for individual creators include a cash prize of $500.

Digital Publishing Awards announce categories for 2017

The NMAF is pleased to announce that the 2nd annual Digital Publishing Awards has expanded their program and have officially revealed a new category lineup.

This year, the Digital Publishing Awards will present awards in 22 categories focusing on the work of Canadian digital creators, while reflecting new trends and attitudes toward digital publishing and content.

These changes come as part of the NMAF 2016-17 Strategic Initiatives to expand the DPA program, while continuing it’s efforts to foster, recognize and promote excellent editorial content by Canadian digital creators.

After a successful inaugural year, the industry feedback clearly indicated there was a need to broaden the Digital Publishing Awards to be more inclusive of areas of excellence in the digital landscape. We surveyed our judges, sought feedback from our participants, and convened an Advisory Committee of industry experts to help shape the program for the future. Based on these learnings, the program has substantively evolved to recognize excellence in digital content and journalism, and in particular to call attention to the best practices and innovations in the craft. We believe the program this year reflects that enthusiasm.

ABOUT THE DIGITAL PUBLISHING AWARDS

The Digital Publishing Awards promote and reward the achievements of those who create digital publishing content in Canada—the writers and editors, designers and developers, video and podcast producers, photographers and illustrators, and many others. The DPA program recognizes, celebrates and promotes to a national audience the innovative publishing teams that produce digital content in Canadian media.

This year, 63 Canadian digital publications participated in the DPAs, submitting the best of their digital content, design and innovation from the past year for consideration in 14 awards categories. 42 individuals volunteered their time, their expertise, and their passion for digital publishing in serving as judges for this year’s awards. They nominated 66 entries from 21 different digital publications for this year’s awards, including 5 finalists for the coveted award of Digital Publication of the Year.

The Digital Publishing Awards are produced by the National Magazine Awards Foundation, a not-for-profit, registered charity that has administered Canada’s annual National Magazine Awards since 1977. With a reputation for facilitating a rigorous, fair and transparent awards program in which content creators are recognized and rewarded for outstanding achievement in magazine journalism, the NMAF is proud to present the Digital Publishing Awards in consultation with Canada’s leading producers and creators of digital publishing.

Chris Frey to host 2016 Digital Publishing Awards soiree

The NMAF is pleased to announce that writer and digital editor Chris Frey will serve as the host of the inaugural Digital Publishing Awards soiree, Thursday June 9 at the Spoke Club in Toronto. Tickets & Event Info.

Chris Frey is a Toronto-based writer, editor, and radio producer. Currently the Toronto correspondent for Monocle, he’s a six-time National Magazine Award winner and has contributed to The Guardian, The Walrus, Globe and Mail, Icon, Maisonneuve, Azure, and CBC Radio. In a past life Chris was the founding editor of Hazlitt, the Toronto Standard and Outpost magazine. In a future life (and any day now) he will finally complete his book Broken Atlas, a collection of international reportage.

Today the NMAF announced the nominees for the inaugural Digital Publishing Awardsrecognizing excellence in the content and creation of Canadian digital publishing.

2016 DIGITAL PUBLISHING AWARDS SOIREE
Join members of Canada’s digital publishing industry for the 2016 Digital Publishing Awards soirée on Thursday, June 9 in the newly redesigned Portland Room at the Spoke Club in Toronto’s King West district, hosted by Chris Frey. TICKETS

Chris Frey is a Toronto-based writer, editor, and radio producer. Currently the Toronto correspondent for Monocle, he’s a six-time National Magazine Award winner and has contributed to The Guardian, The Walrus, Globe and Mail, Icon, Maisonneuve, Azure, and CBC Radio. In a past life Chris was the founding editor of Hazlitt, the Toronto Standard and Outpost magazine. Tickets include one free drink and food provided by the Spoke Club’s classically trained chef Rob Klunder, who creates sophisticated dishes influenced by seasonal ingredients, prepared simply but with flair. Cash bar and celebration of Canadian digital media will continue throughout the evening.

The DPAs provide a platform to promote and reward the achievements of those who create digital publishing content in Canada—the writers and editors, designers and developers, video and podcast producers, photographers and illustrators, and many others. The program aims to recognize, celebrate and promote to a national audience the innovative publishing teams that produce digital content in Canadian media.

Gold, Silver and Honourable Mention awards will be presented at the inaugural Digital Publishing Awards soirée on Thursday, June 9 at the Spoke Club’s fabulous Portland Room at 600 King Street West, Toronto. Digital Publishing Awards: Last Call for Early-Bird Entries

The Digital Publishing Awards program is looking for Canada’s best digital content creators, designers, innovators and publishers, with awards in 14 categories for feature writing, news coverage, blogging, visual storytelling, video, podcast, multiplatform publishing, design and more.

The early-bird deadline is Monday, February 8: Enter online by that date to save 20% on entries. The final deadline is February 16.

Rebate for Small Publishers at Digital Publishing Awards

The new Digital Publishing Awards program is offering a free entry to small digital publishers whose budgets could use a break. Publishers with annual revenue under $50,000 are eligible to participate.

To apply for the Small Publishers Rebate, complete the online application form and submit by February 8 (also the DPA’s Early-Bird deadline for discounted entry fees).

The 2016 Digital Publishing Awards are open to Canadian digital publishers, designers, innovators and content creators. Awards will be presented in 14 categories:

Launching Today: 2016 Digital Publishing Awards

The National Magazine Awards Foundation (NMAF) is pleased to announce the Call for Entries for the inaugural Digital Publishing Awards, a bilingual national program recognizing excellence in Canadian digital content and creation.

Beginning Thursday, January 7, submissions for work published in 2015 will be accepted until February 16, 2016. The Early-Bird deadline for submissions is February 8.

This new awards program will provide a platform to promote and reward the achievements of those who create digital publishing content in Canada—the writers and editors, designers and developers, video and podcast producers, photographers and illustrators, and others.

Digital publishers with established brands in magazine, newspaper, broadcast and other journalism, as well as publishers that serve their audiences exclusively on digital platforms will be eligible to enter, including those that publish in either English or French.

For the inaugural year, creators and publishers will have the opportunity to have their work recognized at the national level in fourteen awards categories :
