A Writer’s Guide to Canadian Literary Magazines & Journals

They publish much of Canada’s best poetry and prose. The writers whose creative work appears in their pages range from established icons of Canadian literary arts–such as Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood and 2013 Giller Prize winner Lynn Coady, to name just a few–to new writers published for the first time.

They are Canada’s literary magazines, and they are not only a source of reading pleasure, but also a critical part of our country’s culture and a forum for literary artists across the land.

The following list, an A-to-Z guide to Canadian literary periodicals and their submissions guidelines, compiled by the National Magazine Awards Foundation, focuses on those magazines that currently publish short fiction, poetry and/or creative (aka literary) non-fiction. Many also accept submissions for essays, literary criticism, reviews, interviews, graphic narratives and visual arts. And many have won National Magazine Awards.

Your Guide to Fall 2013 Magazine Writing Contests

Magazine contests present a great opportunity for up-and-coming writers to get their creative projects published and their talents recognized by the magazine industry. They also offer many of Canada’s best literary mags a chance to grow their readership (most contests offer a complimentary subscription with the entrance fee) and connect with potential new writers. It’s about the most perfect win-win situation imaginable.

Plus, once in a while it leads all the way to a National Magazine Award. Earlier this year, the winner of the annual National Magazine Award for Best New Magazine Writer went to Sierra Skye Gemma, whose winning story, “The Wrong Way,” was a contest winner in The New Quarterly. A 2008 winner in Prairie Fire‘s creative non-fiction contest, “Prehistory” by Alex Leslie, won a Gold National Magazine Award in Personal Journalism. (Read our interview with Alex Leslie.) Many other magazine contest winners have been nominated for NMAs over the years. (Check out the NMA Archive.)

And whether it leads to a publication, an award (and prize money!) or just the next chapter of your life as a writer, the magazine contest is best appreciated for moving that story or poem you’ve been working on into production; for getting it finished and putting it out into the world.

Here are some contests coming up this season, offered by a host of great Canadian magazines…

Quebec Writing Competition open for entries

Quebec Writing Competition Submission ManagerThe annual Quebec Writing Competition, supported by Maisonneuve and CBC Canada Writes, is accepting submissions for its 2013 awards. Entries may be fiction or non-fiction, previously unpublished, with a maximum of 1200 words. Participation is limited to residents of Quebec. The submission deadline is May 1.

The first-prize winner will receive a cash prize of $1500, have their work published in Maisonneuve and broadcast on CBC Radio’s Cinq à Six; the second-prize winner will receive $1000, have their work published on Maisonneuve‘s website and broadcast on CBC.

There will also be one Readers’s Choice winner who will receive $300 and a broadcast of their work. All three winners will be published in a CBC Canada Writes anthology.

The winners will be announced at the QWF Literary Awards Gala in November, 2013.

Vote for your favourite British magazine cover

The United Kingdom’s Professional Publisher’s Association is marking its 100th anniversary with a magazine covers contest open to public vote.

While there are only ten finalists from which to choose (rather disappointing, considering the thousands of titles and hundreds of thousands of magazine issues that have been published since 1913), the small selection is spread across generations and broad topics, from the world wars to technology, from the first issue of Cosmo to the legacies of Churchill, Chernobyl and Darth Vader.

This blogger was drawn to the 1941 Harper’s Bazaar cover featuring plump, almost Atari-like bombs falling around St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, with a brilliant yellow streak of fabric drawing the eye up through a blood-red bow to the helmeted dress form. The absence of cover lines makes a lasting impact, and the inherent nostalgia of the price line (“two shillings and sixpence”) probably swayed me, too. A magazine cover for its time and all time. (Or so says one voice. What do you think?)

Click here to view the finalists and vote. Voting closes on the distant date of September 30, 2013, and the winner will be announced on November 21, the exact one-hundred-year anniversary of PPA’s establishment.

From the contest creators:

Send us your finest original interpretations of these ancient storytelling traditions! Moral lessons, animals, mythical creatures—you know the deal. You could be the next Aesop!

Deadline approaches for The Walrus-CIC long-form contest

The long-form, general interest magazine The Walrus magazine (winner of 93 National Magazine Awards since 2003) has teamed up with the Canadian International Council to support a competition for the best pitch of an internationally focused, long-form journalism story.

The winner will develop the pitch with a Walrus editor into an investigative article of 5000-7500 words, to be published by the magazine next year. And the cash prize is $7500.

The competition is open to graduate students, journalists, academics, former public policy figures, or members of NGO and business communities. It has two objectives:

  • to promote an investigative, reported, or analytic article of the highest quality by a Canadian or resident of Canada who is involved in international research;
  • to raise the profile of a salient issue in international political affairs within Canada and worldwide.

Submissions deadline is October 26, 2012.

Categories include Action, Life at the Cottage, Landscapes & Nature, and Photos by Kids (15 and under).

One grand prize winner and first-, second- and third-place winners in each category will receive various prizes courtesy of Nikon and Lowepro, plus publication in the Winter 2012-2013 issue of Cottage Life.

Winners (it’s unclear how many) will also be published in the October 2012 issue of Up Here, Canada’s premier outdoor magazine for the north (and a former winner of the National Magazine Award for Magazine of the Year).

The deadline for entries is September 1. Photographs must be taken in Canada’s north (by which they probably mean Nunavut, the Northwest Territories or the Yukon).
